Building Healthier Soil, Healthier Food & a Healthier Future
On 5 December 2025, we had the privilege of attending the Western Cape Provincial Workshop for the Sludge Application Rate Advisor Model, where experts highlighted something fundamental: healthy soil is the foundation of a sustainable food system.
At Osdam Eco Facility, this message resonates deeply with the work we do every day. Our operation is built on circularity — turning clients’ organic waste into nutrient-rich compost and manure, which we apply on our own fields. This closed-loop system not only improves soil structure and fertility but also ensures that we produce healthier crops and high-quality red meat for the retail sector.
Key takeaways from the workshop:
Know Your Soil
Understanding soil types and their nutrient needs is crucial. Soil health determines what we can grow, how efficiently water is used, and ultimately the nutritional value of the food produced.
Water Recycling Is Essential
With water scarcity an ongoing challenge, recycling and reusing water in agriculture is no longer optional — it’s a necessity. Improved soil structure from compost and sludge application boosts water retention, helping farmers use water more efficiently.
Responsible Sludge & Organic Material Application
When managed correctly and in line with the Sludge Application Rate Advisor Model, sludge and organic waste products become powerful soil enhancers. They replenish nutrients, build organic matter, and reduce dependency on synthetic fertilisers.
Soil Health = Food Quality
Healthy soil produces stronger plants, healthier livestock, and safer, nutrient-dense food. At Osdam Eco Facility, the compost and manure applied on our fields directly support the red meat we produce for the retail sector — creating a transparent and sustainable farm-to-fork connection.
At its core, sustainability starts beneath our feet. By investing in soil enhancement and responsible waste reuse, we’re protecting not only our land but also the long-term health of our environment and the people who rely on it.
We are proud to be part of an organisation that prioritises regenerative practices and continues to push for a more circular, resilient agricultural future.
