Outbreaks persist in several provinces

As of mid-July 2025, South Africa has experienced at least 270 foot-and-mouth disease outbreaks across five provinces, with 249 of these still unresolved.

Detailed breakdown:
  • KwaZulu-Natal: 191 reported outbreaks; 172 unresolved

  • Eastern Cape: 40 reported outbreaks; 38 unresolved

  • Gauteng: 32 reported outbreaks.

  • Mpumalanga: 3 reported outbreaks.

  • North West: 4 reported outbreaks.

  • Free State: An outbreak was reported and the farm quarantined on 8 July, with immediate surveillance and vaccination initiated. Trace back and radius surveillance continue.

  • Western Cape: Remains FMD-free but vigilance is essential with outbreaks in neighboring provinces posing a constant threat.

Osdam Eco Facility "strict protocols"

Our facility's approach aligns well with established guidelines, such as:

  • Enforcing animal sourcing from clean zones only, with proper health declarations.

  • Carrying out 28-day quarantines for new arrivals before herd integration.

  • Maintaining strict transport vehicle disinfection.

  • Controlling farm access and hygiene protocols for staff and visitors.

  • Coordinating surveillance, reporting and compliance with the State Veterinarian.

These measures follow, and in some cases exceed, the provincial biosecurity standards designed to preserve Western Cape's FMD-free status.
